What is Placenta Encapsulation?
Placenta encapsulation is the process of taking the nutrient-rich placenta, and turning it into a easy to swallow pill for women to take during the first few weeks of their postpartum period.
Why would a new mother do that?
Placenta capsules have been shown to balance hormones,
enhance milk supply, lessen postpartum bleeding, and increase energy. Your placenta contains your own natural hormones made for you, not by a pharmaceutical corporation. Women who have taken placenta capsules report fewer emotional issues and a faster more pleasant postpartum recovery.
When the high hormone levels of pregnancy drop significantly by day 4-5 postpartum, it is thought that this fluctuation is a key factor in the development of the “baby blues”. By reintroducing hormones back into their system, many women find that they do not experience these intense emotional swings.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), steamed and dried placenta is used to fight fatigue, which is one of the leading indicators in the development of postpartum depression (PPD). Iron deficiency is also linked to PPD; replenishing your system with the iron-rich placenta can help alleviate a major symptom of PPD. TCM has used the placenta to treat fatigue and insufficient lactation for centuries.
Encapsulated placenta is believed to:
- Increase general energy
- Allow a quicker return to health after birth
- Increase production of breast milk
- Decrease likelihood of baby blues and post-natal depression
- Decrease likelihood of iron deficiency
How is a placenta encapsulated?
I make 2 consecutive evening visits to your home (4 hours total). The placenta never leaves your home and I leave your kitchen cleaner than I found it! Ideally the placenta will be fresh and refigerated, within 24-48 hours of delivery, but it can also be encapsulated if it has been frozen (it just needs to be thawed for 24 hours).
On the first day, I prepare the placenta using TCM techniques and leave it to dehydrate in my dehydrator at your home overnight. On the second day, I powder and encapsulate the placenta. I leave you with a pretty little blue bottle of capsules to take to increase your iron, assist with lactation, reduce fatigue, help stop/lessen your postpartum bleeding, help your uterus contract, and improve your mood. I also leave my phone number in case you have any questions.
How much does placenta encapsulation cost?
You will get approximately 100-200 capsules to use for your
postpartum recovery. The fee for this service is $300.
I look forward to helping you have a happy, healthy, and
natural postpartum recovery!

"Thank you for preparing my placenta the capsules have been really helpful. Especially over the first six weeks." - HM, Sykesville, MD
"I am of of the firm mindset that these placenta pills have yielded us many benefits--my energy levels are up, not suffering from any postpartum feelings, and I am lactating like a cow! The baby is doing great, not fussy or colicky, and is doing her 'duty' several times a day. Later on down the line, if we are blessed with more children, we will certainly NOT go without the placenta encapsulation. We are true believers in the power of this awesome science." - LM, Annapolis, MD
